Gas prices have been doing nothing but increase where we live. It’s frightening to see, especially when we’ve been debating if we should get a second vehicle, especially a smaller vehicle that’s potentially better on gas. The question came up; could we fit our family in a Honda Fit? We’ve talked about larger family vehicles, now it’s time to share about the other end of the spectrum.
We had the opportunity to test drive the 2018 Honda Fit EX-L Navi. Having a smaller vehicle to drive was definitely a change to what we were used to. It was a welcomed change though!
COULD WE FIT OUR FAMILY IN A HONDA FIT?
We were able to get our family of 4 into the 2018 Honda Fit. Doing so included getting a forward facing booster and a forward facing car seat in the back row. If needed, there was potential to fit a third child’s car seat in the middle. It would have had to be a narrow seat but it was definitely do-able. The girls both noticed right away that they felt much closer than in our Honda CRV and they really liked that.
For the driver and passenger seat, this is where things got a bit interesting. My husband and I are both slightly above average height at 5’10” and 5’11” tall. Both of us had no issues when in the driver seat but we both felt it would have been nice if the seat went back another inch or two to give that bit more leg room. The passenger seat is where we had problems. My husband was fine, but my height is all in my legs and even with the chair in the pushed as far back as possible my knees still touched the glove box. We both agreed that we’d like to see the dash design changed to give more legroom for both the driver and passenger. In this model, the dash juts out and consumes potential legroom.
ROADS WERE MADE FOR JOURNEYS
I was really impressed by the amount of storage space in the Honda Fit. I was able to get our stroller in the back of the car without any issues, plus there was still room! In the passenger row of the vehicle is the 60/40 Split 2nd-row Magic seat. You can store items under the seat when they are in the usual position but you can also fold them up if you have a taller item that needs the room. There is a leg under the seat the folds up, it’s brilliant!
I should also mention that the 2018 Honda Fit has a “refresh mode” which turns this subcompact vehicle into one that you can relax in. Take the headrest off of the front passenger seat and fold it completely down and you have a great space to stretch out in. This feature would be great for a road trip and you just need a break to stretch your legs when pulled over. This feature also helps with packing long items into the Honda Fit. Fold down the back of the right rear seat and lean back the front right passenger seat and you have plenty of storage space for a long item to go into the car.
PRACTICALLITY OF A SUBCOMPACT VEHICLE
As with many newer vehicles, Honda has filled this one with all sorts of technology. It’s a nice change having things that are designed to make your drive safer. There are warning systems for lane departure and forward collision warning. There are even lane assist and road departure. All of these are things that can help drivers to be more aware or to give a warning them if needed. The reverse camera is also great to have when backing into spots!
The Honda Fit runs on regular fuel, which is a bit of a help with the increase of gas prices in our area. It has a 1.5 litre 4 cylinder engine. Driving around town and on the highway, we averaged 7.5 to 8 L/100KM. This was a drastic change to the vehicle we own. We were very impressed with the fuel economy. Eco-Assist is a help in keeping gas consumption down.
Thank you, Honda, for giving the fit passenger doors that open wide! As a parent, this makes a huge difference when getting kids in and out of a vehicle, especially if you are lugging a newborn car seat around. Having a door that opens wide can make all the difference.
If you’re looking for something that’s smaller, has decent fuel economy, and the opportunity to fit your family in if needed. The Honda Fit proved to be a great little vehicle to us. It definitely confirmed with us why we are considering getting a subcompact car one day.
Disclosure: Honda provided us with the vehicle to use for a week in order to put this review together. We were not otherwise compensated for this post. We just love trying out different vehicles and sharing our experience with you.

Looks like a fun car to drive. We have a minivan but would love to get a smaller vehicle to use for errands and when it’s just the two of us going out.

It’s not a bad looking little car, would be good for going back and forth to work, but I love my SUV’s and trucks!!

I’ve never considered a smaller vehicle. Our current vehicle has such limited room for our growing family. It’s always nice to read these types of reviews.
