This weekend we attended the much anticipated wedding of my husband’s brother to the love of his life. It was the first wedding we have attended with Evie. My husband was one of two best men, and my daughter was a mermaid flower girl. It was a really fun day, a little stressful, but fun.
The wedding had a beach theme, which is why Evie was to be a mermaid. Such a cute idea for little girls in the bridal party. The outfit originally had a skirt that looked more like a mermaid tail, sadly the bottom did not fit Evie well so the solution was to make a little tutu skirt, both for her and the bride’s niece. (I will share another time on how to make these tutu skirts).
My biggest concerns were about keeping Evie entertained through the ceremony, and trying to fit a nap in. We decided to have Evie sit in her high chair during the ceremony once she was handed back to me after walking down the aisle. She walked down the aisle beside her Daddy no problem. She hesitated for a second but grabbed her Daddy’s finger and kept walking down. Then she bolted for the stairs to go up on the stage, but she did it, she walked down the aisle and didn’t have to be carried or dragged down. I had lots of snacks, her sippy cup, and a few toys for her to play with during the ceremony. She was entertained for the whole thing. At one point she did get a little fussy but my wallet became a good source of creative investigation, and also contained many items to toss on the ground. Thankfully I found all the cards after the ceremony ended. She spotted her Daddy on the stage at one point and started calling for him and laughing.
Right after the ceremony were family photos that were done in military like precision. A list was made with detailed info for who was to be in the photo, getting out of the photo, and who was to be waiting on deck. Evie did great during this too as there were lots of people to keep her entertained now, and she loved playing with the flower petals that were on the ground.
Nap time was fast approaching when the bridal party took off to take a few photos. This meant Daddy was gone too. We had brought her pack-n-play, and favorite stuffed animal, but she would not settle down. I then tried putting her in the car and driving around, this usually does the trick, but again it was a no go. I eventually surrendered and brought her back to the hall. Got some snacks for both of us, and settled in til Daddy got back with the rest of the bridal party.
I am so thankful for all our family, and friends and all of the people at the wedding who helped keep Evie entertained. They sure saved my bacon many times. Especially some of the other kids there, many of them were great about keeping an eye out for Evie and playing with her.
It was a really wonderful evening. Happy tears were shed by all. Evie danced on the dance floor with everyone til almost 9pm when we decided to call it a night after all the speeches, crumble cutting (there wasn’t a cake as the bride is gluten free) that was super yummy, and the bouquet and garter toss. The wedding showed to us that Evie is good with being out so long as she has lots to keep her entertained. We may have to battle with no naps, but if she is happy, she is fine. She fell asleep in the car on the way home, and was easily transferred to bed.
A huge congrats to the bride and groom. We are so happy for you both.
