When our third daughter was born I discovered the show Bluey while up in the middle of the night feeding her and trying to get her back to sleep. As soon as I watched it I knew our older kids would love it. Little did I know then that Bluey would become Orie’s favourite show. It became very clear that we should do a Bluey-themed second birthday party for her.
KEEPING IT SIMPLE
With 4 kids and not much time, we tried to keep things really simple with the decorations and the food. We know kids love balloons and we managed to find balloon garlands in clearance at our local craft store. The Bluey balloon we found on Amazon and the 2 is from a party store here. You really cannot go wrong with balloons. Our kids always love playing with them during and after the party.
We stuck to cheese, meat, crackers, fruit, and veggies, plus some popcorn and popcorn twists to snack on. Don’t forget to grab a Costco-sized pack of juice boxes, we went through about 3/4 of the juice boxes at the party.
DUCK CAKE
There is an episode of Blue in season 2 that is actually called Duck Cake. It involves Bluey wanting to help make Bingo’s birthday cake but first she must put away her toys. Nothing is making her want to clean up until Dad drops the cake. As soon as I saw this episode with the kids I had a flashback to my childhood.
My Mom had the exact cookbook that was featured in the episode, the same book used to show the Dad making the cake. Turns out it’s an Australian book, if you didn’t know, Bluey is Australian. My Mom actually hunted down a copy of the Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book so that I could have the exact instructions for making the same cake.
I’m really excited for all of my kids to now get to flip through this perfectly 80s cookbook and pick a cake design from it for their birthdays in the future.
DESSERT
We love being able to get cookies to go with the theme of the party. @Cakes.By.Holly did it again with this amazing, detailed set of cookies for the party. We loved seeing the sneak peeks she would share on her Instagram stories. The whole set left us shocked. Having purchased the outline cookie cutters of Blue and Bingo we told her to have fun and she took it from there. Creating 2s, pawprints, and more.
Orie and all her friends and family also got to enjoy some simple confetti cupcakes to eat. She did blow out candles from the duck cake, but we didn’t cut into it. Why? To make a carved cake like that it is made with a really dense cake. Not always enjoyable. Thought we did taste test it later and it was good.
THE BIRTHDAY GIRL
It’s still a shock to us that another year has gone by and Orie is two now. This girl is so full of love and has so much personality. She adores books and would have anyone read a dozen books or more to her at any given moment. We love watching her start randomly dancing any time she hears music. The joy she has is infectious. Since the day she was born, there has been just something about her that draws people to her, even to this day. People still gravitate to her. Happy second birthday Orie! We love you so much.
