Christmas is coming quickly and there is one thing my girls love to do every single night; read books. Our home is filled with them and I wouldn’t have it any other way. This time of year I love adding holiday books to their little library. Raincoast Books recently sent three new books our way just in time for the Christmas season.
A UNICORN NAMES SPARKLE’S FIRST CHRISTMAS
This is the third book from the Sparkle series and the first one that we have read. It’s about a girl named Lucy and her unicorn, Sparkle, and how they go about celebrating Christmas together. Of course with a unicorn who is actually a goat, things are going to go wrong. Or at least, they are not going to go how Lucy thought they would. You can take a unicorn to the mall you cannot make it go shopping, and you definitely cannot prevent it from eating the stockings on Christmas day.
Reading this provided a great opportunity to talk to the girls about what they look forward to at Christmas time as well as about the gifts they are hoping to receive. We were able to talk about what Christmas is really all about. Hint, it’s not presents!
MERRY CHRISTMAS, LITTLE ELLIOT
We love the books about Little Elliot and mouse. In this story, Elliot is trying to find his Christmas spirit. He even goes to Santa to request it as what he wants for Christmas. After that visit, he is definitely not in the mood for the holiday season. Something happens though that changes everything.
Reading this actually brought a couple of tears to my eyes. It reminded me about moments in my childhood and how I longed for a friend. It’s a great book to read to encourage kids to make a new friend. The artwork is beautiful and has made me look forward to going to New York City even more.
MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET
A Christmas classic. Many of us know this story thanks to the movie by this title. For the first time, it has been turned into a picture book! I was thrilled to see this as a book, it’s a story I love because of the movie and I have always wanted a book version to read to my kids.
It tells the tale of a little girl named Susan and how Christmas didn’t mean much to her, it was a day like any other. She did not believe in Santa Claus, fairytales or even play makebelieve games. One day she meets a gentleman named Kris Kringle, who she eventually comes to share her one wish for Christmas with. Just in case you for some reason haven’t seen the movie, I am not going to spoil what happens. Just be prepared for your heart to fall in love with this story. Read this book to your kids, and then have a movie night and watch the film too!

I give books to my nieces and nephews every year at Christmas and for birthdays. Thank you for your recommendations, my kids are much older now so I’m not exposed to as much children’s literature these days.
