This past weekend I went to the movies with my Mom. We had the opportunity thanks to Walt Disney Studios to see an advance screening. I was ridiculously excited because I love penguins! As a family, we’ve been watching a lot of different natures shows and Disneynature films are always a go-to for us. We want to know “Will Steve, the Adélie penguin find his happily ever after and survive life in the Antarctic?”.
SYNOPSIS OF PENGUINS
Disneynature’s all-new feature film “Penguins” is a coming-of-age story about an Adélie penguin named Steve who joins millions of fellow males in the icy Antarctic spring on a quest to build a suitable nest, find a life partner and start a family. None of it comes easily for him, especially considering he’s targeted by everything from killer whales to leopard seals, who unapologetically threaten his happily ever after. From the filmmaking team behind “Bears” and “Chimpanzee,” Disneynature’s “Penguins” opens in theatres nationwide in time for Earth Day 2019.
ADÉLIE PENGUINS ARE FULL OF PERSONALITY
When it comes to penguins people often think of Emperor Penguins right away, but there are 17 different species of penguins in the world. I was excited for Disneynature to focus on a different penguin, the Adélie penguin. You’ll fall in love with these small statured penguins in no time! There’s just something about how much personality they show and how expressive their eyes are.
Penguins takes you through Steve’s journey to make the perfect nest, find love, and raise a family. Thrown in there is a doss of the food chain and the circle of life. The one scene that may be “frightening” to some younger members in the viewing audience is where Leopard Seals are shown hunting and catching their prey. While no blood is shown, you do see the Leopard Seals grabbing onto penguins and pulling them under the water. It is very evident that the penguin becomes their next meal.
It is incredible to see what all these Adélie Penguins go through and it is all told by Ed Helms who narrates the film, bringing some of his known comedy to it. Penguins will have you laughing during several scenes throughout the movie. I really appreciated how much fact is jam-packed into the whole movie. Even though the movie’s run time is only 76 minutes, a lot is crammed into it.
Something that I always enjoy is seeing the credits in a Disneynature film and getting a look at just how the movie comes together. It’s fascinating to see how they got clips of orcas swimming through the ice that has broken up and of course how they got all the footage of the penguins traveling across the ice. I would be one happy person if they put much more of this into the Blu-ray + DVD when it gets released down the road. Please, Disney, make sure there is a whole bonus feature with more being the scenes footage!
