It seems like we may be able to start a new family tradition soon. I am a smidge crazy excited for this! Did anyone else grow up watching the Disney movie that would play on, I think, Sunday evenings? My sister’s and I would all get into our pjs, wait for snacks to be served, and my whole family would watch whatever movie was on. Sometimes we’d play our own favourite movie, but still. This is something I fondly remember from my childhood and its a tradition I want to have with my family.
With the Family Day long weekend, we decided to keep it simple and watch a movie. By movie I mean, a few episodes of one of Evie’s favourite shows. We went out and got a dvd of Stella and Sam episodes. This is actually a show we all enjoy watching, it is based on a Canadian book series by similar titles. There is a lot of focus on imagination.
We also made a stop to pick up some fancy pop corn from Kernels, we tried a few flavours and settled on Vanilla Velvet and Jalapeno Jack. Can you guess who picked what flavour? This was our special treat for movie night.
We gave Evie a few pieces of popcorn in a little cup, and her sippy cup of water. She happily sat in her chair, when we told her she needed to sit to have her treat. To my surprise, it went really well! As soon as the theme song for the show started she started to bop along to it… she definitely recognizes the song from Stella and Sam. When she finished her pieces of popcorn she politely signed for “more please” and came over to us to refill her little cup for her. (I posted a Little Moments about it here.) She returned back to her chair and finished the short episode. Then it was off to get ready for bed.
This will definitely be something we do again. As she gets older we might get more creative and do theme nights even, such as snacks to go with the movie. Teddy Grahams to go with The Teddy Bears Picnic, or Goldfish Crackers for with Finding Nemo. There are so many possibilities… We may even invite other family, or friends of ours and their little ones over for a movie night.
