I’LL BE THERE FOR YOU
There are certain TV shows that you think of right away when you think of New York. Two that immediately come to mind for my husband and I are Seinfeld and Friends. We had just finished rewatching all of Friends before our New York City trip. After mentioning that the facade of Monica’s apartment that was used as b-roll exterior shots in the show was actually in New York, we hit the subway to go find it.
THEY DON’T KNOW THAT WE KNOW THAT THEY KNOW
Thankfully we do know where to head to find Monica’s apartment! The actual location of what is filmed as the outside of the apartment is at the corner of Grove and Bedford, Greenwich Village. What you can also do is enter The Little Owl into your phone if you’re going to be using some sort of map app to guide you there. The Little Owl is the restaurant at the bottom of the building, in the red with all the pretty windows.
Looking up that restaurant will make your search so much easier. Figuring out what subway you may need to take and which direction to walk is all made so much easier thanks to apps. I honestly have no clue how people found anything before smartphones. I would have been lost in New York without one. Get your walking shoes ready, it’s about a ten-minute walk from the major subway junction point to get to the apartment location.
IT’S A MOO POINT
While the address on Friends may be fake; it was filmed in California after all, the outside of the building is in New York. It was really neat to get to see something that was used on the show. For anyone that is a big fan, be sure to look way up, the apartment would be on the 5th floor. Apparently the apartment was passed on to Monica by her grandmother, otherwise, there is no way she would have been able to afford it with the crazy cost of living in New York.
Getting there early in the day meant there was not a lot of street or pedestrian traffic in the area, giving the perfect opportunity to take all the photos we wanted! The whole area is very pretty, take your time and enjoy the architecture there. We fell in love with several buildings nearby.
HOW YOU DOIN’?
We got to the Brooklyn Bridge, DUMBO, and to Monica’s apartment from Friends all by 9:30 am! Do you need to cram all these in during one morning? No! For us, this was our last day in New York and we decided to make the most of it. We still have lots of places on our New York bucket list that we didn’t get to see. It just means we hope to get to go back someday. We’d love to visit again in the Springtime and possibly with the kids when they are older.
