Frozen 2 is in theatres now! A while back we decided to keep things simple this year and do a little birthday outing for both of the girls to go see Frozen 2. It’s been 6 years since the original movie came out. It was actually our oldest’s first movie she saw in theatres. We were all excited to see it and intrigued to find out what the movie is really like. How is Elsa doing as Queen? Are Kristoff and Anna married? Where is Olaf’s personal snow flurry? It’s time to have another movie we can all watch on repeat with songs to sing over and over again at the top of our lungs.
SYNOPSIS OF FROZEN 2
Why was Elsa born with magical powers? The answer is calling her and threatening her kingdom. Together with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven, she’ll set out on a dangerous but remarkable journey. In FROZEN, Elsa feared her powers were too much for the world. In FROZEN 2, she must hope they are enough.
We were very enthusiastic about going and seeing Frozen 2, the kids even dressed up for it. We found our seats at the theatre and got ready to find out if the hype was truly worth it in regards to the movie. Elsa and Anna find themselves in an enchanted forest outside of Arendelle. Looking for answers about where Elsa’s powers came from but also how to help keep Arandelle from the latest danger that presented itself. Do pay attention to the reoccurring theme that Olaf brings to everyone’s attention, how “water has memory”. This is important and a key part used throughout the whole movie.
Frozen 2 may be much darker in appearance it still has its funny moments thanks to comedic relief brought to us by Olaf, Sven, and Kristoff. This includes a game of charades played by the group that is filled with a couple of easter eggs that you cannot miss. Disney has a reputation for hidden Mickey’s. This one you will see right away. The artwork is spectacular. You’ll be pondering how they made the ocean look so good. Here’s a hint, Moana is to thank for that one!
IS FROZEN 2 AS GOOD AS THE ORIGINAL?
We all enjoyed Frozen 2. Our kids both had their favourite moments. For our youngest, she loved seeing Anna mature in her role, plus Olaf was a huge hit again. Our oldest loved how brave Elsa was and all of her costume changes. My husband and I found Olaf’s pantomime scene retelling all of Frozen to be hilarious, as well as Kristoff finally getting his big moment and a major song of his own. It’s definitely a nod to the 80s!
While we enjoyed Frozen 2, we would not say it is better than the original. In some ways, the movie is lacking with no standout songs like the original had. Sure, Into the Unknown has some power behind it, it’s just not as memorable. Except, Brendon Urie may just out-sing Elsa with the Panic at the Disco rendition in the credits at the end of the movie. The music was part of what really captivated audiences in the original and it’s missing something in this film.
WHERE IS THIS STORYLINE GOING?
A huge subject is brought to light in Frozen 2 with the producers and writers attempting to tackle it, but falling short in some ways. It’s appreciated that they did attempt to address a subject matter pertaining to indigenous culture. As well as trying to simplify it for children to understand. As a whole, I feel those behind the movie struggled in how to tie this topic as well as Elsa and Anna’s original story together. They did try.
Again, the ending of the movie ends up feeling rushed. You finally get into the movie for the last 30 minutes and it all just comes crashing to an end. Why must you do this to us Disney? It felt like they finally got it all figured out and things were just getting going only to race the end of the movie and Olaf’s end credit scene. That’s right, be sure to stay until the very end of the credits. There is a little something at the very end! Yes, you need to sit through the whole thing.
With all of this in mind, we will still watch Frozen 2 again. My kids are still talking about the movie and everything they loved about it. Plus I’m sure our home will be flooded with all-new Frozen merchandise as it’s released to the Disney Store.
IS FROZEN 2 OKAY FOR YOUNGER AUDIENCES?
This is the big question we have been receiving since we saw the movie as a family. It’s a tricky question to answer because it honestly depends on your own children. It is a much darker movie than Frozen. There are battle scenes, fire, a lot of dark imagery, and a subplot about sabotage, betrayal, and murder between nations. All of this can be intense for younger audience members.
