Today is an exciting and sorrowful day. It’s the last day of Summer vacation for myself but also the last day of Summer before Evie starts kindergarten. I do not feel ready for my oldest to head off to elementary school, but she is definitely eager to go. We have had our share of mixed emotions up to this point. Thanks to Raincoast Books, we’ve been reading through some books all about going to kindergarten, and I think it’s safe to say she’s ready.
KISSES FOR KINDERGARTEN
Might just be one of my favourites. It is about a girl named Stella who decides she doesn’t need to go to kindergarten and instead would be better off spending the day adventuring with her puppy, Buster. Together they set off to re-imagine kindergarten and how it should be.
It’s a very sweet little story, told in a lyrical read-aloud way. Making it easy to read to little ones getting set for their big first day at kindergarten. It is also a great reminder of what kids may need the most on that first day and every day of school… a kiss before they go on their way and one as soon as the school day is done. I know I will be smothering my oldest in hugs and kisses.
PLANET KINDERGARTEN
Prepare your kindergartener to go boldly where every other kid older than them has gone before… school! The countdown is on to go to Planet Kindergarten. If you have a child who loves all things space and who wants to be an astronaut, this is the book for them.
This is a fun little twist on the usual books about going to school. You’ll have fun reading this one as the main character of the books take you through “space travel” and what it is like on Planet Kindergarten with all the usual activities. Learn about the flight plan for the day and just what lunch time will be like.
SCHOOLS FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
Another book that’s a little bit different. It focuses on both the first day of school, but also the school itself is brand new and it’s the school first day! Everything has been prepared, just like kids doing their back to school shopping. School is just a bit nervous, will the students like it?
School finds itself focusing on a little girl who is having her first day of school. Throughout the story you check in on what her day is like too. The art work is simple and beautiful, reminding me of books from my childhood. My kindergartener loved this story and says the little girl in the book is her because of the green eyes. I’ll take it because this story has helped her a lot to be ready for going to school. You’ll have to read the story yourself to find out if School had a good first day or not.
ZOMBELINA SCHOOL DAYS
Now, this one isn’t a first day of school book. It’s one simply about what a day at school is like for Zomeblina. This is the third book all about Zomeblina, who likes to dance. Her dancing continues in this book about school. She has prepared her talent to show in front of her class for show and tell. There is also a new student who she befriends.
While books with zombie themes are not a staple in our house. I can see why Zomeblina books are ones others enjoy. If you know the Flora books you will instantly recognize the art work from Molly Idle. I appreciate how this book talks about doing your best in school and making friends with others. It even goes on to talk about how everyone is different but that is what makes them all cool. One of the fun things about reading this book is all the word play.
