Shark week is finally here! My youngest daughter has been counting down the days until she could watch different shows about sharks and learn even more about them. I’ve been trying to find different ways to keep her entertained and little things to put a smile on her face since she broke her clavicle. Well, when she requested pancakes, I had to make them a little extra special by making shark week pancakes!
This is definitely not going to be a food post where I give you some fantastic pancake recipe, because I do not have one! I totally cheated and used a box mix from Presidents Choice. I used the original extra fluffy mix. We’ve tried lots of different pancake mixes, most of them hit me like a rock. This is the one brand that I can eat and I feel fine. Plus, I wanted to be able to whip these up as fast as possible. Box mix for the win. There’s no judging here… if you have a great pancake recipe that works, let me know! The one thing I do add is cinnamon into the mix. It just gives it a little something extra.
HOW TO MAKE SHARK PANCAKES
Now, my pancakes skills are definitely not on the same level as those who can make incredible art pancakes. But, I tried! All you really need to make fun pancakes is batter and a Squeezit bottle with a round piping tip. I poured the batter into a measuring cup so that it would be easier to transfer into the Squeezit bottle. Put the piping tip on and got to work.
You’ll want to have the pan or griddle on a low heat so that it doesn’t bake quickly and you have time to draw out the shape you want. Draw the outline of a shark first. This is what prevents the batter from overflowing when you go and fill it in. It’s kind of like decorating sugar cookies and flooding the icing. Flip your pancake once it’s starting to go golden and there are no more bubbles popping at the surface.
My first shark looked more like a mutant guppy, but I found my groove eventually. All that mattered was that my kids knew what the shape was and that it made them happy. The girls were able to figure out what I was making right away! Just be very careful when you flip your shark pancakes as the fins are what may break off.
FUN WAY TO ENJOY SHARK WEEK
I put blueberries on the plate to be the ocean. You could get even more creative and make teeth out of cheese or little pieces of apple cut into triangles. What about making gills out of Nutella? There are plenty of ways you can get creative and make an ocean scene for the sharks to be in and to add detail to the shark. I might even add Goldfish crackers next time.
