We are having a snow day here. Which means movies with lots of hot chocolate while warming up. We recently received a copy of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. It’s available now on DVD and Blu-ray.
I waited to watch this one without the kids, knowing that the first was a bit darker. I’m glad I waited because this is also dark, in ways much darker than the first, and could frighten younger kids. However, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the movie. It had everything I was looking for; action, adventure, more information about Maleficent, and just the right amount of cheesiness and romance.
If you have not seen Maleficent yet, you will want to watch that first. Both of these movies are a great new take on the tale of Sleeping Beauty however, the focus is not on her. We get to learn much more about Maleficent. Where she comes from, and why she appears to be so grumpy. Would you believe she is Aurora’s godmother?
After sharing many happy years together, Maleficent and her goddaughter Aurora begin to question the tangled ties that bind them as they are torn apart by Aurora’s upcoming wedding, unexpected allies and new forces at play. But their love proves strong.
The opening scene sets the tone for the whole movie and gives you a look at how it could be too much for younger viewers. You may not see lots of blood, but the idea is there. The characters end up being at war with one another. You have Prince Philips mother, Queen Ingrith and her army vs Maleficent and the creatures of the Moors. There are swords, crossbows, and many other weapons used. While nothing appears overly violent, it can still be too much for some.
THE ORIGINS OF MALEFICENT
My favourite thing about the whole movie is that we learn more about Maleficent and her origins. I don’t want to share too much and giveaway the a lot of the movie. But, there are more creatures like Maleficent! One even saves her life during a confrontation with the Queen that leaves Maleficent wounded. These other creatures help Maleficent learn more about herself, but they also want her to help them in their fight against the humans.
The battle starts after the King fell into a curse of eternal slumber. Now, come on guys, you can put it together to figure out why the Queen would be accusing Maleficent of some wrongdoings. Think about it… Did you get it? Maleficent was framed! Remember, she is the one who originally cursed Aurora when she pricked her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel.
TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT
It seems that Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is a sequel that you can take it or leave it. You don’t really need to see it know the tale, but it is one that is perfect to have. Even if you simply want something for background noise. Some may say it’s a sequel that was not needed, which I can understand. But it is one that I enjoyed and dare I say I prefer over the first.
There is a lot of great acting talent in this film. Elle Fanning portrays Aurora beautifully, with just the right amount of subtlety. Can you imagine anyone else being Maleficent except for Angelina Jolie? You can’t miss the classic, glowing neon green that Disney has connected to characters that are usually villains. Michelle Pfeiffer is a fantastic evil Queen. Maybe an even better evil character than the King in the original movie.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil goes beyond Sleeping Beauty, giving you a tale you didn’t know you wanted to hear. It is full of great storytelling, lots of beautiful scenery and CGI work. All wrapped up, I really enjoyed it and will definitely be watching it again. Sure there are things that could have made it even better, but for a sequel, I will take it. It’s a great medieval fantasy that will capture your attention and maybe a great option for families with tweenagers.

I desperately want to see this movie!! Sleeping Beauty was one of my fave Disney movies growing up. Maleficent was so evil to me. It’s interesting how Disney is now telling her side of the story and I kinda love her 😆
