Mary Poppins has been a favourite movie of mine since I was a kid. I can remember many movie nights where my family and I enjoyed watching it. You couldn’t help but have the songs stuck in your head. My girls are now huge fans of Mary Poppins so when Mary Poppins Returns came to theatres we went as a family to see it. Now, we are thrilled to be able to add it to our movie collection and watch it whenever we’d like to.
Mary Poppins Returns brings back all the wonderful things of childhood; laughter, fun, innocence and of course a bit of imagination. My kids have been singing “Can You Imagine That” and “Turning Turtle” daily since we watched this last week for family movie night. This movie definitely has it’s share of catchy songs like Mary Poppins did.
TODAY OR NEVER, THAT’S MY MOTTO
It’s been 54 years since we last saw Mary Poppins, and I must say it was about time a sequel happened. I appreciate that Emily Blunt took to the books and created her own Mary through what she read. Her version is not as sweet as Julie Andrews, but she is still practically perfect in every way.
There are definitely nods to the first film hidden throughout. Keep your eyes open for a correction to the robin that sang with Mary in the first film, her umbrella returns to chat, and of course, you cannot miss seeing Dick Van Dyke make a cameo appearance. I confess I teared up when he showed up the first time I saw the movie. It also has its own animated scene!
EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE, EVEN THE IMPOSSIBLE
One of the main reasons we love Mary Poppins Returns is the fun that is thrown in. Only Mary Poppins can turn something so simple as a bath into a truly grand adventure taking the Banks children swimming through the ocean. The whole time she is encouraging them to use their imagination and winning them over as their nanny.
The movie is centered around Michael Banks being grown up and facing some financial struggles and the heartbreak of his wife having passed away and how this is impacting his family. Mary Poppins did say she would always take care of the Banks children, and sure enough, she has returned to Cherry Tree Lane to take care of Michael’s own children all while helping him too!
I love that it has a feel all throughout of it having been filmed at a later date. Disney did not go over the top with the CGI which I am thankful for. It kept just the right amount of movie magic. Some of my favourite scenes involve characters flying, but you’ll have to see the movie to know what I am talking about. Marry Poppins is perfectly enjoyable and a fantastic choice if you are looking for a movie that is family-friendly.
WHAT CAN YOU FIND ON THE DVD?
The whole movie has fantastic sound and picture quality that is sure to please any movie fan. If you want to see a big difference, pop your original Mary Poppins video into a tape player! It’s amazing to see how far movies have come. Some behind the scenes of the making of the film, a blooper reel, and a lovely tribute to Dick Van Dyke. Mary Poppins returns will surely win you over.
