GET READY TO LEARN ABOUT NATURE’S NINJAS
A new exhibit, Nature’s Ninjas: Defenses of the Animal Kingdom, opens on Friday, February 10, 2023, and runs until September 4, 2023.
Available with entry for all guests to the Vancouver Aquarium.
WHAT YOU’LL SEE
When you arrive head down to the Tech Engagement Gallery, this is where you will find the Nature’s Ninjas Exhibit. Take your time to explore and read all the different displays. There is a lot to learn about the different defenses all sorts of creatures have. From the venom used by different animals like scorpions and rockfish to the speed of an armadillo and their armored outer shell.
The very first thing that caught my attention when I arrived for the preview was that the displays are all at ground level which makes it easier to see everything there. This definitely helps with the creatures that like to hide, or if you love sloths this is your opportunity to see one down bellow canopy height.
Meet Berry Allen
This is Berry Allen, a Linen’s two-toed sloth. Yes, he is in fact named after the Flash. It just might surprise you how fast these guys can actually be, especially after their monthly bowel movement. Apparently, that makes a big difference! While sloths cannot walk, their body is designed to hang upside down in the trees, they do crawl on the ground to get to another tree if needed. They can also swim if they need to. Berry is 4 years old, which puts him in his teenage years for sloths.
Having the display be lower down provides a great opportunity for guests of all ages to see him closer up and notice details one wouldn’t normally see when compared to the sloths high up in the Amazon section of the aquarium. It makes for a really unique experience.
LOTS TO DISCOVER
The Nature’s Ninjas exhibit has 17 animal habitats that highlight the defensive mechanisms of these animals.
Learn about some of the animal kingdom’s clever defense mechanisms up close at this unique exhibit. Now is the chance to be face to face with a savannah monitor or a four-toed hedgehog. By the way, the hedgehogs are named Quillam Shatner and Winston Churchquill. There will also be small group talks to further discuss the different self-defense techniques.
Every creature is food for something else, it is interesting to learn how animals can defend themselves. If you have the opportunity to do so, definitely check out Nature’s Ninjas at the Vancouver Aquarium.
