This weekend our youngest daughter got to experience a classic kids meal item for the first time. It wasn’t just her first time eating this iconic item. It was mine too. We had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches!
I am 28 years old and had never had a pb&j sandwich.
I know *shock* *gasp* how crazy is that? You see I am a notoriously picky eater and add in all my allergies, you have me just sticking to items I like and know I will eat and enjoy. This weekend though Addie and I got to share a first. She’s ten months and I’m 28.
We were visiting with friends of ours this weekend and they very graciously shared pb&j sandwiches and Alphagetti with us. Now don’t worry I have had Alphagetti before, I craved it at times during my pregnancy with Evie. Pb&j though was entirely new to me.
It’s not that it wasn’t available for me to have when I was a kid. The opportunity was definitely there all throughout my childhood. I love peanut butter. I love jam and jelly. The two together though… nope! Never. I never brought one with me in my lunch to school. I never had one when I was visiting my friend’s house for a playdate. For me, as a kid, it was just two things that were not meant to go together.
I was hesitant at first. I actually let Addie start to try it first. That little girl will eat anything or at least try it once. She loves food and she loves any food she can feed herself. She very quickly picked up her little triangular shaped sandwich and started eating it. Was she ever happy eating the sticky sandwich.
I decided to give it a try and upon doing so realized I have been missing out! I will definitely be enjoying pb&j sandwiches with my kids from here on out.
Since being sent home with a jar of jelly I have been searching Pinterest for other ways to make pb&j. The possibilities seem endless… cookies, muffins, waffles, cake, even popcorn! This just opened a door full of other possibilities to me.
Is there a food item you remember eating for the first time?

I remember the first time I tried seafood. When I was very young one of my Uncles chased me with a lobster and lets just say that turned me off to Seafood lol. But once I tried crab dipped in butter, that’s it I was HOOKED!

Wow! I eat them ALL the time! I just tried squash for the first time a year ago, though and some people were shocked by that. I’m a very picky eater too so it’s hard for me to try new things.

Wow!! I can’t believe you just tried PB&J for the first time! It’s been a staple for me forever! Something new that I recently tried was shrimp. I tried it when I was younger once, but didn’t like it. When I tried it again as an adult, I realized what I was missing out on!

I just introduced PB&J to my oldest a couple of weeks ago! I’m not a huge peanut butter person, so it never even crossed my mind. Someone had a PB&J sandwich in school and she was begging for one!

oh my gosh! that definitely was a WOW … 28 years without pb&j. definitely is a good one to have. both my daughters love their pb&j on toast for breakfast. I honestly cannot even remember what my first food would have been but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was pizza lol
