Children are made readers in the laps of their parents. – Emilie Buchwald
Our girls are both book worms. They will happily sit and flip through books. Half the time Evie stays up past her bedtime because she sneaks out of bed and is reading books. Addie loves being able to go to her shelf in her room and pick out what books she wants to flip through and which ones she wants us to read to her. We are all just happy that Summer is finally here and we are definitely going to be doing lots of reading through Summer.
WHAT BOOKS OUR TODDLER IS LOVING RIGHT NOW…
We’ve added some new books to our bookshelves recently, thanks to Raincoast Books, and the girls are loving them! There’s something special about having brand new books to read. Opening the pages for the first time, looking at the illustrations and reading each page together. Addie has been enjoying two new board books C is for Canada and Flora and the Ostrich. One of her favourite things is story time before her nap and bedtime. Let’s be honest we love it too.
It’s only fitting with it being Canada’s 150th that we introduce Addie to the alphabet with the help of a Canuck primer board book, C is for Canada. It’s as classic Canadian as you can get with M being for maple syrup and Z being for Zamboni. This book is a fun way to go through the alphabet with your toddler and to also introduce different Canadian things. There’s animals, land marks, and so much more.
We have loved Flora books for some time, in fact we have several in the girls book collection. This one though, Flora and the Ostrich, is toddler friendly thanks to it being a board book. It still has those special surprises though like the hard cover books with pages that open up and unfold. This book is all about opposites and keeps the text simple, making is a fun way to introduce the concept of opposites and the new words that go with it to them. Our favourite part continues to be the illustrations in the book and how they depict Flora with her new friend.
WHAT BOOKS OUR PRESCHOOLER IS LOVING RIGHT NOW…
Evie is going to be heading into Kindergarten and she is so excited about learning how to read. She is showing interest and working on this skill already. For now, it’s just incredible to see how easily she can memorize books when we read them to her a few times. It doesn’t take long for her to be “reading along” with us when she picks out her favourite stories. The newest books she is working on and always picking out for us to read are I Wrote You A Note and Don’t Blink! It’s easy to understand why once you get to reading them.
Evie loves interactive books and that is exactly what Don’t Blink! is. It’s all about having a staring contest with the characters in the book. She likes to challenge herself to try and not blink as we read the story. Be prepared to enter a staring contest with all sorts of animals. The illustrations of eye catching and detailed. Even the animals start to struggle with keeping their eyes open.
I Wrote You A Note is all about the journey a note goes on till it gets to it intended recipient. Every time we read this story to Evie we hope that it inspires her to go on journeys this Summer. This has also proven to be a great book for her and her desire to start learning how to read. The text is written in a way that flows easily thanks to repetition and rhyming words. The illustrations also help with providing a great visual about what each page is going to be about. You’ll enjoy reading this book and finding out who all the note visits before getting to where it is supposed to go.
