There is something beautiful and mesmerizing about butterflies. They are so incredibly unique in how as they grow up they completely transform. We recently had the opportunity to see the latest butterfly exhibit at the Vancouver Aquarium. The girls were beyond thrilled to get to go and it gave our oldest something to look forward to after her eyelid surgery.
BUTTERFLIES… FLOWERS THAT FLY
We’ve read The Very Hungry Caterpillar hundreds of times in our house. It’s a favourite. So for us, it was amazing to go and see chrysalises, butterflies emerging from them, and then the butterflies flying all throughout the habitat. They are so beautiful and such incredible creatures.
We had no idea that there were so many different types of butterflies throughout the world! You’d think with having done the butterfly life cycle several times in the schools I’ve worked at that I would have learned this. Nope! There’s around 20,000 types of butterflies. 4000 of those have been discovered in the Amazon.
The girls loved learning all the little random facts about butterflies. Like how they taste through their feet. Or, that a group of butterflies is called a flutter.
SPREAD YOUR WINGS AND FLY
We spent well over an hour just looking at the many butterflies. We learned so much in such a little bit of time, I hope that it’s information that will stay with the girls. In the end, they really loved just taking the time to stop and observe. Looking way up into the canopy of the trees or down low on the ground at the little flowers. Every direction we turned there was a different butterfly to be discovered.
Which one was their favorite? Well, there is a very special butterfly species that we had never heard of until this trip. It has the most unique wings we have ever seen. Or, didn’t see I should say. It’s called the glasswing butterfly. Named after its transparent wings. It can camouflage itself without different colour patterns as many other butterflies have. Instead, it lets the colours of things it lands on or is near be seen through its wings.
If you are looking for something to do with your kiddos, perhaps go check out the latest butterfly exhibit. Maybe your own kids will be spreading their wings and trying to fly and pretending to be butterflies too.

Anyone enjoying this, if they ever visit Victoria on Vancouver Island, the Victoria Butterfly Gardens are well worth an hour and more of their time to visit.

We haven’t been to the aquarium in three years 🙁 We’ll have to make a plan to go see the butterflies as we’ve been learning about them over the last couple weeks
