We have bought the disposable food pouches for our daughter, the price though gets us every time so we stock up when they are on sale, or if we have a coupon. Seriously, the ready made ones are so pricey. I really wanted to try something that was a reusable food pouch. There are lots of options out there! After asking around Squeez’Ems from BooginHead were mentioned to me, one person even mentioned that they had seen them while shopping recently at Walmart. I rushed out to grab a pack to try.
I got my hands on the 2 pack Squeez’Ems food pouch, that comes with a top you can unscrew to fill and clean. If looking online, there is also a zip pouch option. I however really liked the idea of this version because I was worried about the potential for making a mess with the side zip. I could just picture for potential to accidentally dump the contents. I like the possibility of it being able to stand on its own while filling the food pouch.
Reusable food pouches I think are a great idea. The big thing for me is I know what is in Squeez’Ems because I have made up whatever is inside them. Smootheisa re our go to because our daughter loves smoothies. It’s super easy for us to make a smoothie in the morning and fill up the Squee’Ems. If you have a funnel, you can easily tip whatever smoothie or puree mixture you have come up with into the food pouch. We do not own a funnel so I simply used a spoon to scoop our concoctions into it. Because of the way the pouches are designed, when scooping the mixes into it I was able to press down the bottom and have the food pouch stand up while on the counter, I did not have to worry about constantly holding it. Or if you are very coordinated, and your puree or smoothie is the right consistency you can just pour it right in.
Each food pouch holds about 6oz. Which is the perfect amount for a snack, or small serving size. I really like that you can see into the pouch form the back so you can tell what is in it. These pouches were super easy for my daughter to figure out how to hold, with a little maneuvering of the lid she got it. The lid is connected to the food pouch so there is no fear of a random little lid floating around that your little one could potentially swallow. Since it is connected it did take my daughter a few tries to figure out how to keep it out of the way when enjoying the contents of her Squeez’Ems.
The design of the lid being connected to the food pouch could be considered a bit of a con, but kids will figure it out or us parents are there to help them if need be. With the hard lid that allows for the wide mouth when filling the food pouch, it does pose a bit of a flaw in being able to get 100% of the contents out. For myself, I do not find that to be a huge downfall. So long as my kid has enjoyed almost all of the contents, I am happy. The lid took me a few seconds to figure out how to get it unscrewed so I could fill it, but I see that as a good thing because I know my daughter will not be able to open it and squeeze out all of the contents. Washing these is the same sort of process as for washing a sippy cup. No major challenges. They actually even say they are top rack dishwasher safe. Which I made sure to try, and had no problems.
If you are prepping these food pouches ahead of time I recommend serving right away, or freezing and then serving them as they are thawing. These are not slow flow, so if it gets tipped over and the contents are all liquid it will spill. If its a bit thicker consistency is no more of a spill to clean up than the store bought, ready made, food pouches. I will make a batch, and toss them all in the freezer and pull them out as needed. I actually grabbed one the other day and took it to work with me. Yup, not just for kids! I had a lot of questions and comments about it, and the main one was “Do these come in a bigger adult size? I want one!” Having them frozen, and ready to go is great because I can just toss it in the diaper bag, or a lunch kit, and I know it will be ready to eat when eeded. I look forward to the summer and having these to make slushy fruit treats easy an not overly messy.
I definitely really like these, and will be continuing to use them both for my daughter and for myself. I love that I can make whatever I want to put inside them, this way I know exactly what my daughter is snacking on. You can put anything from yogurt, and apple sauce in it, to even a fruit or green smoothie.
