Thanks to Walt Disney Studios, we recently had the opportunity to watch and review the latest releases of The Little Mermaid Anniversary Edition and Ralph Breaks The Internet. If you’ve been following along at Discovering Parenthood for a while, you know that we are huge Disney movie fans. Almost every family movie night features a movie from Disney.
THE LITTLE MERMAID 30th ANNIVERSARY EDITION
The Little Mermaid has been an all-time favourite of mine since I was a little kid. I can remember putting the video into the player, trying to get the tracking just right, and loving all the music in it. My oldest daughter is also a huge fan of The Little Mermaid. Maybe it’s that Ariel and her both of have red hair. Maybe she just loves the ocean. Either way, we even had a mermaid themed birthday party where Ariel made an appearance.
Please don’t laugh, but we actually have still been watching this movie on video. That’s right, we have a tape player! As soon as this anniversary edition of the movie arrived we put it into the Blu-Ray player to see what was different. Immediately the quality of the picture is fantastic! It almost looks like they have redone every single piece of the movie to make it look so much better. Nothing is grainy, and the colours just pop off the screen.
Venture under the sea where Ariel, a free-spirited mermaid princess, longs to be part of the human world. After bravely striking a bargain with Ursula, a sneaky sea witch, Ariel embarks on the adventure of a lifetime. With Flounder and Sebastian at her side, Ariel will need all of her courage and determination to make things right in both her worlds.
There are a couple of scenes that our youngest will run out of the room when they come up. She is very aware of things so when scenes become a bit scary, like when Ursula is around, she is out of there. This is something she is very independent about, but do know that if your little one is the same you may want to rewatch it yourself first so you know when to fast forward.
The music is still what captures us every time we watch The Little Mermaid, it is a key factor in why we love it so much. This version will have you singing along in no time. Plus there are bonus features you are going to want to check out. Did you know there was another merman in the movie who got cut from it? I had no clue!
RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET
From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes the action-packed adventure Ralph Breaks the Internet. Ralph and fellow misfit Vanellope risk it all by traveling to the world wide web in search of a part to save her game, Sugar Rush. In this special multi-screen edition of Ralph Breaks the Internet, Ralph and Vanellope find themselves in way over their heads, so they must rely on the citizens of the internet – including Yesss, the head algorithm and heart and soul of the trend-making site, BuzzTube, and Shank, a tough-as-nails driver from the gritty online auto-racing game, Slaughter Race – to help them navigate their worlds.
One part of the follow up to Wreck It Ralph you will be sure to love is the reunion of all sorts of Disney royalty. The princess scene showcases inside jokes and nods to them, all of which is done in a way that will have you laughing. Vanellope finds herself surrounded by all of the Disney Princesses and showing them the world of casual wear.
There are some parts to Ralph Breaks The Internet that we found to be a bit too dark for us and especially for our kids. The Double Dan scene was one that we quickly fast-forwarded through, plus the scene where Ralph feeds the bunny too many pancakes. Ralph Breaks The Internet is a PG, but I would strongly suggest that this is a movie meant for tweens and up. There is more of a focus on themes and topics that are better suited for this age group. Plus, it may give an opportunity to talk about it with your tweens.
Ralph Breaks The Internet takes the imperfect characters of Ralph and Vanellope and their friendship on a wild adventure when she needs a replacement part for her game. In a way, this movie explores how the internet can be both a wonderful and terrible place. The main characters find themselves in danger when a virus is set loose and their friendship is also put to the test. You’ll have to watch it to find out if their friendship will survive everything that happens.
