HE’S BACK!
That’s right, Scott Calvin, AKA Santa, is back! It’s been 28 years since we were first introduced to Tim Allen’s Santa Claus. I was 7 years old. This is who comes to mind when you mention Santa to me. When I heard about The Santa Clauses miniseries coming to Disney+ you better believe I was hopeful for the return of my childhood Santa.
Scott Calvin is dealing with struggles to keep up with the demands of his job as Santa, as well as being there for his family that lives at the North Pole. Scott learns there is another clause that gives a way to retire from his post. He is considering stepping down as Santa Claus all while finding a worthy successor so that he can focus time on his family and become a better father and husband.
SANTA’S MAGIC IS FAILING
Thanks to Disney+ I got to watch the first two episodes before they were available to the subscribers. I was so excited to see Tim Allen back in the red and white suit. Things are definitely a bit different, it’s been 16 years since the last time we travel to the North Pole to see Santa. The show is very quick to make connections to the first film. We are brought back to the little girl Scott met on his first night taking over as Santa and she would go on to recall him saying he was lactose intolerant and left him soy milk.
As mentioned, Santa’s family is still all at the North Pole after all these years. Mrs. Claus (Elizabeth Mitchell) and their kids (Austin Kane and Elizabeth Allen-Dick). It’s been pointed out that the North Pole may not be the best place for human children to grow up. While out on Christmas Eve Santa is realizing the nice list is getting shorter and he’s having to stop at fewer places. His magic also starts to falter and fail him, by the next Christmas it’s worse.
Scott learns that there is a Secessus clause. This clause means he can retire, but he has to find a worthy successor before doing so. What’s Christmas without a Santa Claus? He is torn between wanting to retire and not wanting to leave the North Pole. Scott realizes that he has his children who could be possible candidates. If they take on the role of Santa he can remain at the North Pole. Unfortunately, none of his kids are interested in the role. We even get to see what Charlie is up to now. Buddy and Sandra both want to find out what life outside the North Pole is really like.
THINGS THAT CAME TO MIND RIGHT AWAY
I appreciated all the little nods to the previous movies. I like the flashbacks and how they are trying to tie them all together. There’s even an accident with Santa.
Did you put two and two together reading the actors’ names earlier in this post? Tim Allen’s daughter is his on-screen daughter in this miniseries.
What is going on with Santa’s look though in these episodes? Whoever was in charge of the suit worn by Tim Allen for his Santa look needed to have double-checked things, he’s looking like he has a bit of a hunch back. While I love a handlebar mustache, what’s with the curls in his beard? It’s almost too much.
I am with Carol (Mrs. Claus) in needing to let down her hair. I can totally understand why Mrs. Claus would be over that look while living in the North Pole.
NOT GOING TO STOP BELIEVING JUST YET
The miniseries is feeling like it is having a bit of a slow start with the first two episodes. Both do end on little cliffhangers to draw you into the next episode. I am not going to stop believing just yet. I have hope that this might wrap up The Santa Clause series just that little bit more. While it may not be demanding all of my attention while watching (4 kids might add to the distraction) the holiday magic is definitely there.
We’ve got 4 more episodes to go in this 6 episode miniseries. I will definitely be watching all of them with my kids. Bring on the popcorn, eggnog, and a bit of holiday cheer.
