BEFORE YOU GO WALKING THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE
On our last full day in New York City, we had a couple of places left that we still wanted to go sightseeing at. One of the top items on the list was walking the Brooklyn Bridge at blue and golden hour first thing in the morning. Walking across this bridge is one of the most quintessential things you can do when visiting New York. Honestly, it’s a must!
Take into consideration the time that you want to visit the bridge and where you are staying. You are going to need travel time. For us, we had to go from Manhattan by subway to the Brooklyn Bridge City Hall Station. Our travel time was roughly 30 minutes. We used the app Gold Hour to figure out exactly what time we wanted to be there to actually arrive before blue and golden hour. This is a favourite time of ours for photos, it’s beautiful out, plus you get to see the sunrise.
You’ll also want to take some time to check Google Maps and make sure you know where the entrance to the bridge is. For a second we were a bit confused, as there were no other people around making their way to the bridge. If we had gone any later there would be large numbers of people walking in the right direction and all you need to do is follow the crowd.
WHY DOES THIS BRIDGE DRAW SO MUCH ATTENTION?
Maybe it is the many television shows and movies it’s been in. Perhaps it’s thanks to the many Instagrammers and the photos that flood the #brooklynbridge feed. You most definitely want to beat all of the Instagrammers trying to get their best shot when arriving at the bridge, going their early in the morning helps with that. As we were leaving the bridge and started heading towards DUMBO, we were greeted by a wave of people in all sorts of outfits. Some carrying bags full of fashionable pieces and excessive camera and photography gear.
There is no denying the attention that this bridge gets. The Brooklyn Bridge, that goes over New York City’s East River, was completed in 1883 after 14 years of construction. It is the world’s first steel-wire suspension bridge. It is absolutely beautiful and a sight that needs to be seen in person. Bridges made today do not have character like this.
TAKE YOUR TIME WALKING ACROSS
Going when there is not a lot of foot and bike traffic means you have the opportunity to take your time walking across the bridge. Be sure to stay in the pedestrian lane, or at the least make sure no bikes are coming so you do not get hit by one. Walking the Brooklyn Bridge is not something you should rush. It will take about 20-30 minutes to cross anyways, give yourself time to stop, look and take photos. Watch the sunrise, the traffic bustling below, boats crossing the river and birds flying in the sky all around you. You’ll likely find yourself spending 45 minutes to an hour while there.
Whatever you do, make sure you stop and look the behind you! This will help make sure you do not miss any of the sites.
